For the Week of September 27, 2006

The Fall college golf season is now in full swing and there are a number of early surprises.  Alabama Coach Jay Seawell led his team to their second victory at the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate on September 26th.  The Tide opened the season a week earlier at the Carpet Capital Classic against a strong field of 18 teams.

Southern California’s new Men’s Golf Coach Chris Zambri started his first season as a college coach with a victory at the Inverness Intercollegiate.  The winning score of 896, 44 over par, was unusually high for a field that included a number of top ranked teams.  USC was led by freshman Jamie Lovemark who after a very successful junior career finished third in his first college tournament.

On the Women’s side everyone’s pre-season top ranked team, Duke, started with a win at the Mason Rudolph and then followed the next week with a second place finish at the NCAA Fall Preview.  The Georgia Bulldogs switched positions with Duke after finishing second at the Mason Rudolph, they came back to win the Preview against 14 of the top 15 teams in the country.

University of Denver won their second tournament of the season at their home tournament, the 2006 Ron Moore Women's Intercollegiate at Highlands Ranch Golf Club, on September 26th. The Pioneers started the tournament with a school-record 9-under par 279, then shot back-to-back scores of 285 and shattered their own 54-hole school record with a 15-under par total of 849, 22-shots better than runner-up BYU (867). DU's previous program-low 54-hole score was 878, set just last week at the Salbasgeon Suites Invitational.

Both Alabama and Denver should be ranked in the top 5 when the new Golfweek Sagarin rankings come out on October 1st.
