LPGA
Playoffs 2006 and the ADT Championship
New to the LPGA Tour
in 2006 is the debut of the LPGA Playoffs 2006, which
culminates at the ADT Championship. LPGA Playoffs 2006
is a yearlong competitive structure that will include a
“regular season” that splits the LPGA schedule into two
halves, with 15 players from each half qualifying for
the ADT Championship using a performance-based points
system throughout the year, plus two wild cards. The
2006 winner of the ADT Championship will earn $1
million, the largest first-place prize in the history of
women’s golf.
About the LPGA
Playoffs 2006
•
The LPGA Playoffs
2006, which culminates at the ADT Championship, is the
first-ever playoff system for professional golf.
• The 2006 LPGA
Tour season is broken into two halves, creating two
points’ races during the year that will increase the
drama and excitement for fans and sponsors of the LPGA
Tour.
– The first half
concludes with the final full-field domestic event
(Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic Presented by Kroger)
prior to the Tour traveling to Europe.
– The second half
concludes with the final event (The Mitchell Company
LPGA Tournament of Champions presented by Kathy Ireland
Worldwide) prior to the ADT Championship.
• Fifteen players
qualify from each half, plus two wild cards for a
32-player field at the ADT Championship.
• The two wild
cards will be the top-two players from the ADT Official
Money List, who are not otherwise qualified, prior to
the Global Group events.
About the ADT
Points system
• Players qualify
for the ADT Championship by accumulating ADT Points
during each half of the season or by winning an
automatic entry.
• Only LPGA members
will earn ADT Points or automatic entry.
• ADT Points are
awarded to the top-20 finishers in official events only.
• ADT Points will
not carry over from the first half of the season to the
second half.
• Tournaments will
be categorized as “Global Group,” “Major,” “Points” or
“Winner” events.
• Major Events
include the Kraft Nabisco Championship, McDonald’s LPGA
Championship Presented by Coca-Cola, U.S. Women’s Open
conducted by the USGA and the Weetabix Women’s British
Open.
–
The winner of a
Major Event earns automatic entry into the ADT
Championship.
– Other top-20
finishers in Major Events gain double ADT Points toward
the relevant half of the season.
• Points Events
include most full-field events.
– The top-20
finishers earn double ADT Points toward that half’s
total, but the winner of Points Events will not earn an
automatic entry.
• Winner Events
include most limited-field events.
– Players winning a
Winner Event will automatically qualify for the ADT
Championship, with single ADT Points awarded to the
top-20 finishers.
– The Global Group
(pre-determined international events) events will be
combined to count as one Winner Event, with the player
earning the most combined ADT Points in these events
earning automatic entry to the ADT Championship. No
further ADT Points will be awarded.
• Players will be
required to play in a minimum of three Points Events in
each half of the season (if less than nine Points Events
in a half, the minimum will be two) in order to be
eligible for the ADT Championship.
About the 2006
ADT Championship
• The 2006 ADT
Championship will offer a $1,550,000 total purse with a
$1 million first-place paycheck, the largest in the
history of women’s golf.
• The ADT
Championship winner will be named the season champion.
• The ADT
Championship will be held at Trump International Golf
Club in West Palm Beach, Fla., at the end of the
official LPGA season.
• The ADT
Championship will feature three days of “playoffs” and a
final-day dramatic shoot-out conclusion.
– The first cut will
be after 36 holes to 16 players with a sudden-death
playoff used in case of a tie.
– The second cut
will be after 54 holes to eight players with a
sudden-death playoff used in case of a tie (scores are
cumulative through 54 holes).
– The final round
will be played in four groups of two, with all players
starting with a fresh scorecard.
– Whoever shoots the
lowest score in the final round will win the ADT
Championship. A sudden-death playoff will be used in
case of a tie.
